Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
